ecoLOGIC helps a supermarket save energy, money, and improve comfort

Heating and cooling are among the biggest operating costs for supermarkets. HVAC and refrigeration systems can account for 50–60% of total energy use, covering both customer comfort and food safety¹.

That was the reality for ICA Nära Mårtenssons, a neighborhood supermarket in Lomma, Sweden. Located near the southern coast outside Malmö, the store is exposed to cold winter temperatures, strong winds, and frequent wind chill below –10°C.

With a single automatic sliding door serving both entrance and exit, heavy daily foot traffic meant the door was often open. Cold drafts became noticeable for customers and staff near the checkout area.

“I worry about costs and about the future.”

“As a business owner, I worry about all my costs,” says Mårten Mårtensson, owner of ICA Nära Mårtenssons.
“But I also worry about the environment and the future.

“My winter heating bills were high. We’ve installed solar panels on the roof to reduce our energy costs, and I’m always looking for ways to increase our energy efficiency. When staff and customers started mentioning the persistent cold draft from the door, I knew I had to act to improve comfort and support our sustainability goals at the same time.”

“If we can save energy, we can use it elsewhere. It’s good economics, good for the environment, and good for the region when we avoid wasting energy.”

A smarter way to manage the door

Looking for a cost-effective solution to combat the wind-driven cold, Mårtensson contacted his ASSA ABLOY representative. Because the store’s sliding door was already an ASSA ABLOY system, he was introduced to ecoLOGIC and agreed to pilot the solution in early 2024.

ecoLOGIC is a secure, cloud-based AI solution that automatically adjusts door behavior, including opening speed, closing speed, and hold-open time. It adapts continuously based on local weather conditions, temperature differences, and customer flow throughout the day.

By optimizing each opening, ecoLOGIC helps reduce heating and cooling losses while maintaining a welcoming entrance during busy periods.

As a result:

  • Energy use is reduced significantly

  • Door opening cycles are typically lowered by 2–7%, reducing wear

  • Maintenance needs decrease, and door lifetime is extended

All of this contributes to lower operating costs and a smaller carbon footprint.

ecoLOGIC’s cloud connectivity also enables remote monitoring and service, reducing the need for on-site technician visits and helping issues be resolved before they escalate.

Independently verified performance

ecoLOGIC’s performance is validated by independent third parties.

The solution has earned GreenCircle Certified – Certified Energy Savings, confirming that ecoLOGIC measurably reduces energy consumption at building entrances.

ecoLOGIC has also received the TÜV SÜD Test Mark for Low-Risk AI, one of the first products to earn this new certification. The voluntary mark provides third-party validation for AI applications considered low risk under the EU AI Act, demonstrating transparency, reliability, and controlled system behavior.

Measurable savings and a noticeable difference

For ICA Nära Mårtenssons, the impact was immediate and significant.

Year-over-year comparisons showed annual electricity savings of 9,000 kWh after ecoLOGIC was installed. With a local electricity cost of approximately 1 SEK (Swedish Krona) per kWh, ecoLOGIC's payback period was less than six months.

Best of all, the store felt more comfortable.

“Now the door closes quicker in the winter, and you really feel the difference on cold, windy days,” says Mårtensson.
“I can measure the savings, but you can also feel that it works and benefits the people working at the front of the store.”

More insight, beyond energy savings

ecoLOGIC delivered additional value as well.

“Beyond the energy savings, it’s interesting to see customer flow patterns,” Mårtensson adds.
“That helps us understand when to be ready for customers and manage the store better.”
