Richard brings sustainability to Australia

Originally from England, Richard now manages industrial door projects in Australia. He sees the #doornerds competition as a great way to spread the word about the quality products from ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems.

When the global financial crisis hit in 2008, Richard Salt and his wife sold everything and moved halfway around the world to Australia. Already at that time he had been working with doors for many years.

"I started working with Crawford doors when I was still in school, in Stoke-on-Trent, England," he says. "One of my neighbors needed a hand with a few jobs on the weekend, and it took off from there."

Working as a contractor for ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems

After finishing school, Richard got a job with Crawford doors, where he worked for ten years. After relocating to Australia, he began working as a contractor for ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, handling installations, project management and training.

"The day we moved away from England it was -10 °C, and when we arrived in Brisbane it was 33 °C," he says, laughing. "It took me nine months to get used to the climate."

Richard says that ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems' industrial doors has been very well received in Australia. As a contractor, Richard works almost exclusively with ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, on everything from single doors to major distribution centers of international companies.

Massive reduction in cooling or heating expenses

"It is a developing market here," he says. "We are working on changing the mindset of people when it comes to the thermal properties of doors. A lot of the doors here are uninsulated roller shutters, but if people switch to doors with really good insulation – like the 1042 door that was just released – it can lead to a massive reduction in cooling or heating expenses."

For the #doornerds competition, Richard has been contributing not only photos from recent projects, but from his entire 28 years of working with doors.

"I would describe myself as a door nerd," he says. "For my wife, it is infuriating as we drive along and I point out doors that I have actually installed. When we left England, she thought she had escaped that. But now we have been here long enough that I am doing the same thing again. My wife would definitely say I am a door nerd."

Door nerds are people with an interest in doors

And how does he define a door nerd? "Door nerds are people with an interest in doors. Whether it is a healthy or unhealthy interest, well, that is subjective."
