Environmental Specialist

We are seeking a motivated Environmental Specialist to join our team at our Berlin, Connecticut manufacturing facility. This role offers the chance to work hands-on with a variety of environmental programs while supporting a collaborative, solutions-focused operation.

You’ll work closely with our Environmental Manager and Wastewater Treatment Operator to ensure compliance, strengthen sustainability initiatives, and keep critical systems running smoothly. You’ll build a deep understanding of wastewater treatment, electroplating and metal finishing processes, and facility utility systems — applying that knowledge directly to improve performance and meet environmental goals.

This position combines regulatory compliance, technical problem-solving, and continuous improvement, providing a dynamic work environment where every day brings a new challenge and the opportunity to make a measurable difference.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Environmental Manager to maintain compliance with environmental permits and plans, including RCRA, DOT, SPCC, EPCRA, FIFRA, Stormwater, Wastewater, and Air regulations.
  • Contribute to our ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System, participating in internal and external audits.
  • Identify and recommend corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance environmental performance.
  • Support sustainability efforts by tracking monthly metrics and helping drive energy, water, and waste reduction projects.
  • Collect, organize, and manage daily/weekly/monthly inspection records and environmental data.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory reports, including Discharge Monitoring Reports and Stormwater Monitoring Reports.
  • Manage hazardous and regulated waste shipments in compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of plating, production, and utility systems to better support compliance, operations, and sustainability goals.
  • Serve as a backup to the wastewater treatment facility operator, including troubleshooting and maintaining system performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Science, Environmental Sciences, or Environmental/Chemical Engineering, or related field strongly preferred; may be waived with demonstrated commensurate experience
  • Strong ethical standards, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels.
  • Proficiency with Excel and other data analysis tools.
  • Be an active member of the facility’s spill response team, including maintaining 24-hour availability for rare emergency situations.
  • Meet respirator fit test requirements and complete all necessary spill response and safety training.

Desired

  • Industrial wastewater treatment experience
  • Comfort with technical troubleshooting — including pumps, valves, and wastewater treatment chemistry.
  • Familiarity with compliance reporting such as EPCRA Tier II and TRI, biennial hazardous waste, annual air emissions compliance certifications
