Modeling and Simulation Engineer
ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in access solutions, has an exciting engineering opportunity available. As a Modeling and Simulation Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of digital innovation - where digital twins, physics-based simulations, and sustainability-driven design transform how we design, test, and launch cutting-edge access solutions for a safer, smarter world.
The Modeling and Simulation Engineer designs, validates, and operates high‑fidelity digital representations of ASSA ABLOY opening solutions (mechanical and electromechanical hardware, door assemblies, and Electronic Access Control subsystems). You will integrate CAD/PLM data, and physics‑based or data‑driven models to improve reliability, compliance readiness, and sustainability outcomes—shortening iteration time between concept, test, certification, and launch, as well as reducing project costs.
This position will be based onsite in Berlin, CT.
What you will be doing
- Build physics‑based (FEA/CFD/multibody) and/or data‑driven models that represent doors assemblies, door hardware, electromechanical locking hardware, and EAC device interactions across the opening supporting Americas businesses.
- Calibrate and validate models against historical test data, quantify model confidence, and optimize product designs prior to product launch.
- Simulate performance requirements across regulatory and industry standards: lifecycle/duty cycles, environmental profiles, misuse/abuse, and certification-relevant applications (e.g., inputs aligned to UL/BHMA/SDI/NFPA/ICC standards to improve our resistance to hurricanes and tornados by running digital simulations of windstorm conditions as an example, etc.)
- Run “what‑if” trade‑offs for materials, material thickness, manufacturability, etc. to lower cost, weight, and energy consumption while maintaining compliance and durability.
- Generate model‑based evidence for pre‑compliance risk reduction and test planning, reducing the number of physical tests.
- Structure models for reusability across product families and modular platforms.
- Help reduce our carbon footprint and hit our science based targets (SBTi) by using modeling to assess material and product changes. Quantify material and cost savings opportunities
- Champion model‑based engineering practices in NPI/CPI and Innovation processes; create playbooks and templates, and lead training with engineering teams as required.
- Partner with PLM owners to keep CAD/BOM/twin artifacts effectively stored and traceable
- Coordinate with the IP team on IP disclosures when novel mechanisms or methods emerge
What we are looking for
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Aerospace, or related engineering field (MS preferred).
- 3+ years building simulation models (FEA, structural dynamics, fatigue, kinematics; CFD a plus) for mechanical products and electromechanical products.
- Hands‑on use with a major FEA software platform(e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, or equivalent)
- Proficiency in CAD modeling tools(Solidworks preferred)
- Collaborate with engineering and compliance teams designing test plans for standards‑driven products and translating model results into certification risk reduction.
- Comfort with electromechanical and mechanical products designed to perform life safety, high security and access controls functions.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication/presentation skills - ability to communicate at multiple organizational levels.
- High degree of comfort working in a fast-paced environment with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate cross functionally at all levels
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in virtual learning programs and MS Office applications.
- Well organized with excellent time and task management skills are critical.
- Passionate, Motivated and Enthusiastic about learning and development with a service oriented attitude.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
- Ability to travel 10-15%
