Senior IBM i Administrator

Summary: We are seeking a highly experienced Senior IBM i Administrator to manage and maintain our IBM i (AS/400, iSeries) systems. The ideal candidate will be proficient in day-to-day operations, monitoring, and performance tuning, with a strong secondary focus on IBM i security hardening, compliance, and best practices.
You will work as a key member of our IT infrastructure team to ensure system availability, reliability, and security in a mission-critical environment.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
System Operations
- Monitor and manage the health, performance, and availability of IBM i systems.
- Execute and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
- Perform IPLs, system saves, PTF installations, and license key updates.
- Schedule, monitor, and troubleshoot batch jobs and job queues.
- Perform daily system checks and log reviews to ensure optimal operation.
- Collaborate with application teams to troubleshoot issues and optimize system usage.
Security & Hardening
- Conduct IBM i security audits and implement corrective actions to address vulnerabilities.
- Harden system security by configuring object-level and user profile security, exit programs, authority collections, and audit journaling.
- Implement and maintain security policies in line with industry standards (e.g., NIST, CIS) and compliance frameworks (e.g., SOX, HIPAA, PCI).
- Manage and monitor security logs (QAUDJRN) and intrusion detection/prevention settings.
- Work with internal auditors or external consultants to ensure compliance with internal and external security requirements.
- Review and improve user access controls, password policies, and role-based authority.

EDUCATION:
Preferred undergraduate degree in computer science, information systems or related field and/or equivalent work experience.
EXPERIENCE:
A Minimum of 5 years related experience in a business production environment.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE and/or ABILITIES
Required
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with IBM i operations and administration.
- Strong working knowledge of IBM i command line and system tools (e.g., WRKACTJOB, WRKSYSSTS, WRKDSKSTS).
- Experience with IBM i security features: user profile management, object authority, exit points, and audit journal.
- Proficiency in backup and recovery techniques using BRMS or equivalent.
- Experience with security auditing tools such as PowerTech, HelpSystems, or native IBM i tools.
- Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred
- Experience implementing IBM i security best practices and frameworks.
- Familiarity with RPG-based application environments.
- Understanding of TCP/IP networking and communication protocols on IBM i.
- IBM i certification (e.g., IBM Certified System Administrator - IBM i) is a plus.
- Experience with high availability (HA) technologies and logical partitioning (LPAR).
